Generative Engine Optimization

Get cited in AI answers, not ranked below.

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting a brand cited inside AI answers rather than ranked below them. The problem is that almost nobody measures it properly. AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, which means every crawler that matters is invisible to Google Analytics, to Google Search Console, and to every analytics tool that runs in a browser. Interconnections instruments those fetches server-side, so the question stops being a theory about content quality and becomes a number you can watch move.

  • Server-side AI crawler measurement, not a content-quality guess
  • Built for ecommerce and DTC, not enterprise B2B
  • 104 AI citations across 5 answer engines for one brand

Why most GEO work is unfalsifiable.

  1. a.

    The crawlers are invisible

GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest fetch raw HTML and run nothing. Any analytics tool that works by executing JavaScript in a browser sees exactly none of them, so a dashboard showing no AI traffic is not evidence of anything.

    Observation
  2. b.

    Rankings are the wrong unit

An AI answer either names you or it does not. There is no position three. Agencies that report GEO progress in ranking movement are reporting on a different game, because the thing you are trying to win has no positions in it.

    Observation
  3. c.

Citations get counted by hand, once

A screenshot of ChatGPT naming your brand is a single sample of a probabilistic system. Ask the same question ten times and you will get several different shortlists. One-off checks cannot tell you whether anything actually changed.

    Observation
  4. d.

The advice is mostly recycled SEO

Plenty of GEO deliverables are a technical SEO audit with the word "AI" added. Some of that overlap is genuine, since answer engines do read the same pages. But schema tidying alone has never made a model choose one brand over another.

    Observation
  5. e.

    Nobody separates reading from citing

These are two different failures with two different fixes. A site AI never fetches has a discoverability problem. A site AI fetches constantly and never quotes has an authority problem. Interconnections measures both before recommending anything.

    Observation
  6. No agency can guarantee a citation

Anyone promising guaranteed placement in an AI answer is describing something they do not control. Interconnections will not, and treats a claim like that from a competitor as a reason to check the rest of their numbers.

    Diagnosis

What the work actually involves.

  1. 01Server-side crawler instrumentationEdge middleware that logs every AI crawler fetch by bot, operator, and intent, splitting bots that index for training from bots that retrieve a page to answer a live question. The second group is the one that precedes a citation.
  2. 02Repeated citation samplingThe buying questions your customers actually ask, run many times across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and AI Overviews, so the output is a citation rate rather than one screenshot of one answer.
  3. 03Entity consolidationAnswer engines have to be able to tell who you are before they can recommend you. That means one canonical entity across your schema, your directory profiles, and the third-party sources that mention you, rather than a dozen unlinked versions.
  4. 04Answer-shaped contentPages built to be quotable: the claim stated plainly near the top, the number attached to its source and its sample size, and the limits named. Interconnections writes this way because hedged prose does not survive summarisation.
  5. 05Original data worth citingModels quote sources that say something nobody else can. First-party benchmarks and teardowns give an answer engine a reason to name you specifically instead of paraphrasing the consensus.
  6. 06Off-site corroborationReviews, directories and third-party roundups are a large share of what models read when deciding who to recommend. On-site work has a ceiling, and Interconnections will tell you when you have hit it.

Questions about GEO.

  • Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of getting a brand named inside the answers that AI systems generate, rather than ranked in a list of links beneath them. Interconnections treats it as two measurable problems: whether AI retrieves your pages at all, and whether it cites you once it has.

Stop guessing whether AI recommends you.
